Alexis Lichine, the French wine expert, once said: “When it comes to wine, I tell people to throw away the vintage charts and invest in a corkscrew. The best way to learn about wine is the drinking.” The greater the variety, the better. Unfortunately, there are two shortcomings. Firstly, a bottle of wine contains, on average, 10 units of alcohol. If we are all model citizens and are willing to accept the nanny state being imposed by the government, this means limiting ourselves to 2.1 bottles/week for the men, and 1.4 bottles/week for the ladies. Considering that the UK alone has around 400 vineyards, this barely skims the surface. Secondly, even if we rigorously subject ourselves to such a regime, the cost will be astronomical…
Glass Half Fulham brings together a group of “I-don’t-know-much-about-wine-but-I-know-what-I like” drinkers who all share a common desire to educate themselves about this fascinating world. This allows us to be adventurous in trying more unusual bottles, as well as to taste wines which are normally out of our price range. Based in Fulham, we meet once a month to enjoy a selection of wines drawn from all over the world. This blog aims to record our views and opinions of the wines we taste, and thus is primarily aimed at our members. But to the fellow wine enthusiast who stumbles upon our little addition to the wine cyberspace: we hope you enjoy your visit. And if it spurs you to broaden your taste in wines too, then we would say that our job is done!
