LP continues exploring his passion: Burgundy The last week in August (almost inevitably) heralds my birthday and this year was no exception. I was very kindly given, among other wonderful gifts, a pair of Riedel Burgundy glasses, a gift that I felt obliged to christen appropriately. To this end, I picked up a bottle of [...]

Burgundy Discoveries

LP’s latest jaunt around France led him through Burgundy, where he tasted some exceptional wines… Having left Fulham at 5.30 in the morning; enduring a very slow ferry crossing and a very quick drive down northern France’s fabulously smooth (and empty bar the ubiquitous Dutch caravaners) péages, we arrived in Savigny les Beaune in the [...]

JK went to New Zealand last month (lucky b*****d), here’s what he had to say. I have just returned from a very sunny holiday on the North Island of New Zealand, where I visited the classic Hawkes Bay region and discovered the delights of Waiheke Island. Waiheke Island is located in the Hauraki Gulf, a [...]
A thoroughly enjoyable dinner, with some wine

A few evenings ago, JG and SD invited me over for dinner, where I enjoyed their fine cooking. In return, I brought the wine. Some complemented the food better than others (I must add that it is my fault as SD had already told me what was for dinner!). For starters, SD had prepared Grilled [...]
Pinot Noir from Burgundy

Current theory states that a reasonable 1er cru should be left well alone for five plus years, but I’m afraid a decent steak supper and a rather tough day forced me into a little impatience. Opening the foil of the 2004 Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot Volnay Les Santenots, Volnay 1er Cru (Fortnum & Mason, approx £18, [...]
Pinot under £10, which does taste like Pinot!

Everyone now seems to be singing praises of the 2008 Co-op Santa Helena Pinot Noir, Casablanca Valley, Chile (Co-op, £7.99, currently on offer at £5.99). I might as well just quote the tasting note from the 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards (where it was an International Trophy Winner). “Ripe cherry, violets, chocolate, a hint of [...]
The Hermit Crab

In keeping with my current obsession with d’Arenberg, I cracked open the 2007 d’Arenberg The Hermit Crab, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale (£9, Waitrose). Made from a blend of Marsanne and Viognier (both Rhone grapes), this pale straw coloured wine has a nose of dried apricot, white flowers and mineral. There is also that smell which [...]
Good value Kiwi pinot

New Zealand is famous for its Pinot Noir, and the following wine shows that you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for good Pinot. The 2007 Sherwood Estate Pinot Noir, Marlborough (£9.99, Planet of the Grapes) is earth, farmyard and spices on the nose. Tannins are fine-grained and smooth. Ripe red fruit [...]
Red from Languedoc

Been a while since I last posted something. Opened a 2006 Seigneur de Salvanhiac Saint-Chinian (Morrisons, £5.99, down from £9.99). Saint-Chinian is in Languedoc, and is known for its tannic red wines. This one is no exception, and is a tad to tannic for my taste (but I did have it without food!). According to [...]
A Burgundy and a wannabe

Just had two fabulous (but rather pricey) wines. The 2006 Domaine Buisson-Charles ‘Vieilles Vignes’ Meursault (Wines of the World, £23.99) had a very pure aroma (might get lynched here, but it did smell sanitised, reminiscent of a swimming pool!), butter, oak, roasted nuts. The richness and intensity of the flavour was nicely balanced, with some [...]
